'Ravens' Bentwood Box is by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Trevor Hunt. This natural wood Bentwood box has sides of yellow cedar and a lid and base of red cedar. It has been sandblasted and oiled on all four sides and features a beautiful and contemporary raven design.
Bentwood boxes are unique to the First Nations people of the Northwest Coast. Boxes are made from a single plank of red or yellow cedar that is grooved on each corner, steam-bent, and then folded to form the four sides. The two ends are pegged together before the addition of the base and the lid. This ingenious method makes the boxes both beautiful and watertight.
With the red cedar lid, this box is about 8 1/2 inches or 21.5 centimeters high and about 6 inches or 15 centimeters wide on each side. Without the lid, the box is about 7 inches or 18 cm in height.
