Argillite Beaver Copper Pendant

$4,800.00

This beautiful Beaver Copper Pendant is made of Argillite, 18 K Gold, Mother of Pearl, Abalone and Catlinite. It is carved by Darrell White from the Haida Nation. The very unique pendant depicts the traditional Haida beaver crest of the Eagle Clan on a copper, with a chewing stick and a chief's head carved on the beaver's tail. The back of the pendant shows a salmon coming out of the pendant. The beaver represents the keepers of the salmon. The chief's head represents the raven transformation. The copper represents the wealth that has been brought by the salmon to the Haida Nation. The salmon coming out of the back ties the story together and is typical for Darrell's very detail oriented work. The pendant is an interpretation of the story on how the raven tricked the beaver on the mainland (who were the keepers of the salmon) to show him where they were hiding the salmon. To do this the raven transformed himself into a human chief's child and lay on the beach close to the beaver's lodge. After day's of lying on the beach and crying, the beaver opened their hearts and saved the child. They brought the child into their lodge and took care of him. After many years the raven at last found out the secret of where the beaver kept the salmon. He then transformed himself back into the raven and rolled up the huge hidden lake where all the salmon were kept, stole it and flew back to Haida Gwaii. On his way back over the mainland and over Haida Gwaii he lost drops of the lake everywhere he flew and everywhere where the drops landed, salmon were introduced to all those areas. The pendant's size is about 2 1/4 inches long x 1 1/2 inches wide and 3/4 of an inch deep. The pendant comes with a beautiful bentwood box. The price includes shipping to the USA and Canada.
