This Bakwas or Wild Man of the Woods Mask is hand-carved in red cedar and signed by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Talon George from the Gwa’sala and ‘Nakwaxda’xw First Nations in Port Hardy on Vancouver Island. The mask has a brown / copper finish layered atop black acrylic, with some black highlights and finished with a protective clear coat. Long chestnut-brown horsehair and a smaller mask on top completes the work.
The mask is about 17 inches or 43 centimeters long excluding the hair and about 9 inches or 23 centimeters wide and 12 inches or 31 centimeters deep. Including the hair, the mask is over 44 inches or 112 cm centimeters long. The small mask that adorns the top of the mask is about 5 1/2 inches or 14 cm by 3 1/2 inches or 9 cm.
