This Crying Princess Portrait Mask is carved and painted by Coast Salish artist Brant Johnny Sr. from the Cowichan First Nation on Vancouver Island. The mask has been hand-carved in red cedar and painted with blue, light blue, red, and black acrylic paint. The mask has been decorated with brass eyebrows, horsehair, and features 17 mother-of-pearl inlays on the forehead and cheeks.
The mask including the hair is about 28 inches or 71 centimeters long, 9.5 inches wide or 24 centimeters long, and about 8 inches or 20 centimeters deep. Without the hair, the mask is 12.5 inches or over 32 centimeters high.
