Ravens and Bears Bentwood Box

Sold

This beautiful white Ravens and Bears Bentwood Box is by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Trevor Hunt. This Bentwood box has sides of yellow cedar, a red cedar bottom and a lid of yellow cedar with red cedar trim. The base has been sandblasted and painted in white acrylic, with a bear design on two opposing sides, and a raven design on the other two opposing sides. The lid has a  hand carved Raven design and is adorned with 7 mother of pearl inlays.

Bentwood boxes are unique to the First Nations people of the Northwest Coast. Boxes are made from a single plank of red or yellow cedar that is grooved on each corner, steam-bent, and then folded to form the four sides. The two ends are pegged together before the addition of the base and the lid.

With the lid, this box is about 9 5/8 inches or 24 1/2 centimeters high, just over 9 inches or about 23 centimeters wide at the top, and 8 inches or 20 1/4 centimeters wide at the base. Without the lid, the box is nearly 7 inches or 18 centimeters in height.
