Corey Moraes
Corey Moraes was born in Seattle, WA in 1970 and raised in Vancouver, BC. He is of Tsimshian descent, belonging to the Raven Clan of the Lax Kw’alaams Nation.
He has been artistically inclined his whole life. Asked to paint a 35 foot canoe, he began his professional career in 1997, after a month-long canoe journey from Hazelton to Victoria BC.
Corey strives to bring a unique blend of tradition and contemporary flair to all of his creations. His work has been exhibited around the globe including Vancouver, Seattle, Los Angeles, New York and Europe.
Mostly self taught, Corey has had the privilege of sitting with some luminaries of the art field including David A. and David R. Boxley. Corey strives to bring an authenticity to his work regardless of the medium.
Corey works in precious metals, wood, painting and airbrush; each piece providing an opportunity to create something well made and timeless. With a deep knowledge of traditional forms, Corey is able to construct contemporary work firmly rooted in the past, while speaking to today’s audience
“My work is an unspoken dialogue, learning from past masters this language of forms, I strive to create pieces that inspire those who witness it. What began as a way to express myself in traditional forms has given way to building a body of work that may speak to future generations and hopefully inspire others to continue to create and support this rich and vibrant art form.”
