Lionel Samuels
Lionel Samuels is a Haida carver of the Yahgu ‘Iaanaas Raven clan, born in 1963 in Queen Charlotte City on Haida Gwaii. At the age of seven Lionel was already carving, and by the time he was twenty he was sculpting professionally and featuring his work in major galleries.
His argillite works are incredibly sculpted, with carefully incised designs. He is inspired by his ancestors and the Haida stories of his Grandparents, and his work often features Haida mythological and spiritual creatures. His Grandfather was famous Haida carver Captain Andrew Brown.
Lionel also professionally restores Haida argillite sculptures for the Royal British Museum in Victoria, BC, and for the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC.
