They could make lightning with their eyes and flap their wings to produce thunder. They could pick up whole whales with their immense talons and bring them back to their home to eat. In short, they held dominion over the skies. Since the time of the flood, my ancestors have been able to look up to the mountains and see Queneesh, the glacier overlooking the Comox Valley. It is a symbol of our origins and is important to our territoriality. My ancestors were always keenly aware of their environment and were conscious of the supernatural world that also surrounded them. Although they recognized that they held dominion over their territory, they also acknowledged that this dominion was flexible. It was shared with animals on the land, in the sky, and under the sea. It was under the influence of the supernatural world. When Europeans came to this land, dominion became fixed and inflexible. Fences went up and lines were drawn on maps. The kings, and later queens, held the dominion. Under this dominion, the land has been transformed and the supernatural world has become hidden. Nobody sees the Thunderbirds come out to fly from our mountains anymore. They say that within a generation, nobody will see our glacier anymore, either. It is these sacrifices that have ensured that we can live our lives in comparative peace. This year, 2005, has also been named the “Year of the Veteran.” When we remember the young soldiers entering battle, we must not forget those who have fallen and those who have returned, haunted and emboldened by the depths and triumphs of war. The memories of the soldier, the pilot, the nurse and the seaman must live on beyond a single day on the calendar and be cause for reflection and remembrance throughout the year.In “Remembrance,” I pay particular homage to the Aboriginal Veteran. While it may be known that a significant number of Aboriginal Canadians volunteered to join the military during the major wars, many do not know that they lost their Indian Status in the process. Promised pensions and housing for joining the forces, many did not receive them and, because they were no longer “Indian” under the law, they could not return to their reserves—many became poor and homeless. The tragedy lies in the fact that their battlefield comrades respected the First Nations soldiers and relied on each other in a way that only brother in arms can. When they returned home the Natives were once again relegated to their second-class status. Through four thunderbirds forged into the form of a poppy, “Remembrance” symbolizes the strength that our soldiers, our veterans and our fallen must have held for our protection. It is dedicated to all Canadian soldiers and, in particular, to my wife’s late grandfather, Thomas Clement."

- Andy Everson

The acid-free Moab Entrada 100% cotton rag paper measures about 13x13.75 inches or 33x35 centimeters. Here he encountered people of a strong culture, greeting him in their great canoes. He came to their land in search of a Northwest Passage to service the trade of the British Empire. While he did not find that passage, he was said to have discovered a number of areas of the present British Columbia coast, including the site of his namesake city, Vancouver, BC.

During his short tenure on the coast, he gave names to a host of places, often naming them after members of his crew—Whidbey Island, Puget Sound, Mt. Baker, Cape Mudge, Broughton Archipelago and Menzies Bay to name a few. He marked these names on maps and afterwards dined with his crew onboard the HMS Discovery. What he may or may not have considered is that all of these places already had names—names that described attributes of the place or referred to sacred and profane historical moments in time; names that had existed for countless centuries.

Like most early explorers and men of duty to their country, Vancouver had to return home. I envision that as he passed by Kwakwaka’wakw territory for the last time, he looked out between the ratlines of his sloop and witnessed our moon. In that moment of truth, he may have realized that he would never return to this ancient land—his presence was but a blink in the timeline of the coast. After bidding farewell, he returned to England, quickly becoming embroiled in controversy and passed away only 3 years later in obscurity. Back on the coast, though, the flourish of his pen and those of other visitors like him was all it took to ensure that most of the ancient names of the region would forever be relegated only to the memories of its original inhabitants. We start our days with these little rituals that are so embedded in our day-to-day life that we pay them no mind. For others, cleansing has a whole other meaning. From the outside these other methods may look similar and entirely physical. Quite the opposite, this cleansing draws in the spirit world and connects us to the practices of our ancestors.Ritual cleansing varies greatly across North America. Some First Nations, for instance, utilize smudging to cleanse and protect themselves and others. This entails washing with the smoke of sacred plants such as sage or sweetgrass. Others enter sweatlodges to bathe in steam and connect with their ancestors. Here they may be gifted visions as part of their cleansing. Since time immemorial, my ancestors have bathed in our rivers and streams. Entering frigid waters our people would wash themselves within the lifegiving force of the river. This prepared them for the possibility of capsizing in their canoes. More importantly, however, it was and is a ritual cleansing that binds them to their ancestors. It is a spiritual journey—the river washes away the bad and imbues the bather with profound inner strength. At all times during our history, we have been defensive of our territory. That is not to say that we didn't allow others into our region. Instead, we had a mutual respect that mandated that others ask permission to enter our borders. We shared in the abundance that the land and the sea had to offer with almost any tribe, from near or far. Since time immemorial, though, there have been times when this respect has been breached.

Occasionally, this has been brought about by times of desperation and times of hunger. Instead, it primarily consisted of late-night raids in which the attackers would paddle their canoes close to the village and sneak into the big houses while everyone slept. In many instances, massacres were the result. On the hill above our village in Comox Harbour, we had a defensive palisade into which my people could retreat if given enough warning. My mother has always told me that far across the Comox Peninsula was a lookout site at Cape Lazo. Here, a small group of stalwart watchmen would look north and south watching for the telltale shape of approaching canoes. If danger was imminent, a runner would be sent along the 8 km trail to the main village to warn the K'omoks people. No matter if it takes place after long hard days of work or after sessions of play, our body has an extraordinary ability to send us off to another world. We drift off to a land of excitement, of terror, of pleasure and of pain. We visit the past and enter the future. We meet strangers and friends and see people that have long since gone from our mortal world. We travel to far off places, beyond the clouds and into another world. When we fall asleep we enter dreamtime. While we’ve all, no doubt, had many interesting encounters while sleeping, I think our ancestors understood how to engage their dreamtime better than most of us can possibly imagine. One day a number of years ago, my grandma’s younger sister, Nunu, got very sick. When told, my grandmother got extremely upset and made it clear to my mom that she desperately wanted to be with her sister–several hundred kilometers away. She said that she wanted to climb into bed and cuddle with her to make her sibling better. She went to sleep sobbing. When she woke up in the morning, she was a new woman–she was happy and content. My mom later talked to her cousin and his wife on the phone to see how Nunu was doing that morning. They said that she had had a horrible sleep as Nunu insisted that her sister Maggie was hogging the bed all night! To me, dreamtime is one way that we can briefly pull ourselves away from this mortal world. We journey up and through those clouds unknowing what is over the horizon. We take a journey without leaving our beds. I really feel that we need to cherish our dreams as a gift. Whether you believe that they are gifts of the Creator or of your subconscious mind, there is no doubt that dreams are important to all of us."

- Andy Everson

The acid-free Moab Entrada 100% cotton rag paper measures 17x22 inches or 43x56 centimeters. I always found it fascinating how such a big city could exist so close to nature. From the tall buildings of downtown and across the bridge to the north shore, one could easily go mountain biking or skiing in less than an hour. From prime vantage points, I could look out through English Bay and across the Strait of Georgia to the island of my birth and of my people. I always love going out in Vancouver and enjoying the hive of activity in the downtown core. It is always a pleasure to get out for a beautiful meal with family or friends and then go for a walk along Robson or Granville streets. Even better is when the sun is going down and starts to reflect off the windows of the high-rises, casting a gorgeous orange glow throughout the city. If you time it just right, you can make it down to Stanley Park or English Bay Beach to watch the sun disappear behind Vancouver Island in a golden explosion. At English Bay Beach is an inunnguaq––commonly called an inukshuk––given to the city of Vancouver by the people of the Northwest Territories. These dances have been primarily obtained through intermarriage with the northern tribes of the coast. Characteristic of the Tła’sala, or “peace dance,” is the Yaxwi’we’ headdress. It is a sublime manifestation of valuable items on the coast: a long white ermine train, intricately carved frontlet festooned with abalone shells and a crown of long sea lion whiskers. Sometimes early peoples were changed into rocks or geographical features. Other times, they were made into the form of animals that live in our environment. While these stories may seem far-fetched to some, we are able to witness real-life transformation in nature, today. From the change of seasons to the life phases of the butterfly, transformation surrounds us. For our people, though, the transformation of the sockeye salmon has always been one of the most significant.

A life cycle that begins in a small stream, ventures into a lake and meanders into the vastness of the ocean is capped off by one of nature’s great spectacles. As the sockeye salmon returns from its long journey, it somehow finds its way back to the river and stream of its birth. Upon entering fresh water, it begins to change. The outward appearance of the male is the most pronounced and startling as it develops a humped back, snarling teeth and grotesquely hooked snout. Rapidly, the silver school of salmon become a striking scarlet ribbon. They fight with one another and with the strong flow of the river to make their way upstream. After the long fight, they find a mate and spawn. The length and brutality of the struggle leaves the salmon spent. They have no choice but to succumb to their death. All is not lost, though, as the salmon carcasses that line the banks of the rivers and streams sustain the local wildlife population. The transformation is complete and the life cycle continues....

When I was drawing this image, I couldn’t help but think about the human analogy: men whose bodies change while looking for a mate. Starting out their lives in streams and lakes as alevin, fry and parr, they eventually make their way downstream in formation to the grand ocean. It is here where they spend the next number of years traveling. Most sockeye will journey several thousand kilometers in formation before returning to their home streams. During this time, they will eat large amounts of orange krill which will colour the meat of the salmon, giving the sockeye its distinctive internal hue.

Somehow, their biology decides when the sockeye is to return home. Through their sense of smell and information locked away in their brains, they journey back to the exact same river system that they were born into. It is at this time that they start to line up in formation. They have waited all their lives for this moment. Their sleek silver bodies start to transform. This is especially true for the males: their backs develop a hump, their teeth get larger and their noses become increasingly hooked. As they move into the freshwater of the river, their skin starts to get more and more transparent, such that their bright orange flesh imparts a crimson hue to the returning sockeye.

It is upriver that the sockeye finds its mate. Driven by information, they have returned to their place of origin and will pass on this information to the next generation of sockeye. The female deposits eggs which are fertilized by her mate. We were fishing out of King Pacific Lodge in Whale Channel. I had listened to legends of the territories some fifty years earlier, and now was fishing the same area retelling the stories to my friends. The fishing was great with a light northwest breeze and lots of sun. The day began with a display of aerobatics from over a dozen eagles who were diving on a school of bait on the sea's surface. We then saw a group of orca that numbered around one hundred and fifty. I had only observed this phenomenon once in my youth in the same general area, and had just told that very story when this large group of killer whales came by to thrill us. As it turns out, we witnessed a number of groups or pods coming together, something that is rarely witnessed.

Near the end of the day we set a course for the lodge and came across a humpback whale calf that gave us a display of breaching and splashing about. The cows reacted to our presence by jumping into the ocean, but the bulls were content to sit as kings of their castle and watch us watching them. The sea monster took ‘Na̱mukustolis under the water in order to protect him from the floods. When the waters had receded, Na̱mx̱iyalegiyu put ‘Na̱mukustolis onto the shore where he started the first Nimpkish village called X̱wa̱lkw and became the first ancestor of the ‘Na̱mg̱is people. Later ‘Na̱mukustolis met Ḵ̓aniḵilakw, the Transformer. In a great battle of transformation, the two pitted their skills upon one another, transforming each other into ducks, mountains and kingfishers. Resigned to this stalemate, Ḵ̓aniḵilakw traveled on. Cognizant that Ḵ̓aniḵilakw might return, however, ‘Na̱mukustolis wondered what he should transform himself into for protection. At first he thought he should become a stone, but he quickly realized that stones will eventually crack. The he thought he should change into a big tree, but it occurred to him that trees will gradually fall and rot away. Eventually, he decided that he would become a great river and flow until the end of days. ‘Na̱mukustolis then took on the name Gwanalalis to reflect on this desire. Ḵ̓aniḵilakw could hear his thoughts so he returned and pushed on the forehead of Gwanalalis. He fell to the ground and became the great Nimpkish River, Gwa’ni, and was filled with fish so as to provide for his people. In October of 2011, I was given the name of the great-grandson of ‘Na̱mukustolis, Ḵ̓wa̱mxa̱laga̱lis. My great-great grandmother’s eldest brother, Fred Innis, also held this name. He carried a talking stick representing the great blue heron and held the winter dance name, Gwanalalis. All I can reflect on is that we have a history that is truly as beautiful as any sunset..."

- Andy Everson

The acid-free Moab Entrada 100% cotton rag paper measures 17x22 inches or 43x56 centimeters. One of the common shapeshifters in our history is the trickster raven. While often getting into mischief, he also contributed in setting up the world as we know it today. By transforming himself into a pine needle, for instance, he was ingested by a chief’s daughter, impregnated her and managed to release the sun from a box held in the chief’s possession.
