This Wild Woman of the Woods Mask was hand-carved by Namgis artist Shawn Karpes. It has been carved from red cedar, painted in black and red acrylic, and has horsehair for the hair.
The Tsonoqua or Wild Woman of the Woods is a supernatural being. She goes by many names including Tsonoqua, Tsonokwa, Dzunuk’wa, Zuniquwa, Th’owxiya, The Giantess, The Ogress, and Wealth Giver. This being is often considered female, but may be depicted as male or female.

The mask not including the hair measures 5 1/2 inches or 14 centimeters high, 4 3/4 inches or 12 centimeters wide, and 3 inches or 7 1/2 centimeters deep. Including the hair, the mask measures approximately 9 inches or 23 centimeters high, 10 inches or 25 1/2 centimeters wide, and 3 inches or 7 1/2 centimeters deep.
