The following is an open invite to all, for this Saturday November 14th 2015.
Come meet Corey Bulpitt after his sold-out lecture on Saturday, November 14th 2015 between 2:30 - 4:30 pm at Spirits of the West Coast Native Art Gallery, 2926 Back Road (between Comox and East Courtenay).
On November 14th 2015, Corey Bulpitt will be the guest lecturer in the Comox Valley ElderCollege series, “From Inheritance to Intuition: 7 Contemporary Northwest Coast First Nations artists.” (Though the series is sold out, ElderCollege members may obtain any available rush seats if they arrive at the Stan Hagen theatre by 9:30).
His lecture is called: “AKOS – CLASSICAL HAIDA MEETS HIP HOP”
After learning about classical Haida masterworks, monumental carving, oral histories and ancestral ceremony, Corey Bulpitt realized there was a deep parallel to hip hop culture. Fusing Haida design with street graffiti, he makes a unique statement, building a contemporary Haida aesthetic that uses hip hop as an utterance of his own personal journey and history. “When I’m spray painting now, with Northwest Coast style art, it’s like the movements create their own dance as I’m creating the piece,” he says.
Haida Artist Corey Bulpitt, also known as T’aak’eit G’aaya or “Gifted Carver” was born 1978. He is a great-great grandson of the famed Master Carvers Charles Edenshaw and Louis Collinson. After graduating from Langley Fine Arts School, Corey moved to Haida Gwaii and apprenticed under his uncle, master carver Christian White, for more than 3 years. Corey returned to Vancouver and has collaborated since then with master carvers and peers on many larger national and international carving projects and installations. Today Corey is an avid painter, jeweler, wood and argillite carver who enjoys exploring many different mediums. As a member of the newly emerged Beat Nation Live arts collective, Corey’s contemporary graffiti art pieces can be seen in many museums, festivals and urban landscapes, such as the W2’s New Form Festival and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
Everyone is invited to meet Corey Bulpitt, ask questions and enjoy some of his beautiful artwork. Just drop by Spirits of the West Coast Native Art Gallery between 2:30 – 4:30 pm this Saturday afternoon.
