Christian White
Christian White is a renowned Haida artist, born in Queen Charlotte City in 1962 to the Raven clan, and grew up in Old Masset. He is widely recognized for his meticulous argillite carvings, often featuring intricate inlay work, in addition to his wood carvings, totem poles, jewelry, and original paintings. Christian began creating art at the age of fourteen and working as a full-time artist at seventeen.
Christian has always been deeply involved in his community and culture - he is a member of the Masset Repatriation Committee and constructed a major longhouse in Old Masset. He and his father, Morris White, are recognized their role in reviving the arts of totem pole carving and canoe building within Old Masset.
Career highlights include the creation of a 35 foot totem pole with his father when he was 22 years old, which was acquired by the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver, BC. In 2005, Christian’s work was featured in the Totems to Turquoise exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. In 2007, he received a BC Creative Achievement Award for Aboriginal Art, recognizing his contributions to Northwest Coast art and dedication to Haida culture and history.
