Donovan Gates

Donovan Gates was born in 1954 and is a member of the Old Massett band of Haida Gwaii. He shares the Raven crest, one of the two main crests of the Haida Nation, from his mother’s side. 

He has been mentored by artists over the years including Eli Bell, Dilbert Bell, Hector Thompson, and Maury Clark. He has worked in a variety of mediums including wood, argillite, silver, and printmaking, and after many years has developed an exceptional quality.
