This beautiful white Ravens and Bears Bentwood Box is by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Trevor Hunt. This Bentwood box has sides of yellow cedar, a red cedar bottom, and a lid of yellow cedar with red cedar trim. The base has been sandblasted and painted in white acrylic, with a bear design on two opposing sides, and a raven design on the other two opposing sides. The lid has a hand-carved Raven design and is adorned with 7 mother of pearl inlays.
Mischievous and curious, the Raven plays many important roles in Pacific Northwest Coast Culture. For some, he symbolizes creation, transformation, knowledge, prestige as well as the complexity of nature and the subtlety of truth. He also symbolizes the unknown and shows that every person sees the world in a different way.

The Bear Symbol represents strength, family, vitality courage and health. The bear is thoughtful and independent, with little need for fellowship. The bear is also self-contained and strong-willed in nature. A Bear is of great support and comfort to those who crave human company simply for personal reassurance rather than for the simple pleasure of being with friends. He makes lonely periods of life far easier.

Bentwood boxes are unique to the First Nations people of the Northwest Coast. Boxes are made from a single plank of red or yellow cedar that is grooved on each corner, steam-bent, and then folded to form the four sides. The two ends are pegged together before the addition of the base and the lid.
With the lid, this box is about 9 5/8 inches or 24 1/2 centimeters high, just over 9 inches or about 23 centimeters wide at the top, and 8 inches or 20 1/4 centimeters wide at the base. Without the lid, the box is nearly 7 inches or 18 centimeters in height.
