This amazing Guardian of the Gildas Totem Pole was created by Kwakwaka'wakw carver Junior Henderson. It has been carved in red cedar, painted in black, red, green and yellow acrylic, and features 13 abalone inlays on the box.
The carving depicts the Thunderbird with the Orca crest carved into the chest and wings. The Thunderbird stands atop an enclosed box with a Sisuitl, or three-headed Sea Serpent, carved into it. This masterpiece highlights Junior's use of a wide variety of knife or tool finishing techniques.
