This Pugwis or Merman Mask with Kingfisher is carved and painted by Kwakwaka'wakw Master Carver Bill Henderson from the Wei Wai Kum Nation in Campbell River. The Pugwis has been carved from red cedar, while the raven on top was carved from yellow cedar. The mask has been painted in black, grey, red, teal, and white acrylic and features a bundle of cedar bark on either side.
Pugwis is an undersea spirit in human form with a fish-like face, gills, round eyes, and two large beaver-like teeth.
The mask measures approximately 23 inches or 58 1/2 centimeters high, 17 inches or 43 centimeters wide, and 13 inches or 33 centimeters deep.

This piece is part of our exhibition “Looking After a Legacy: Through the Grains of Cedar” which opens on September 3rd 2022. While this artwork is available for purchase, we do ask to hold the piece at the gallery until October 3rd 2022 for the first month of the exhibition.
