Shark Woman Transformation Sculpture in Argillite

$6,700.00 CAD

This large argillite sculpture of a Shark or Dogfish Woman in Transformation is carved by Haida carver Marcel Russ. The sculpture is about 9 inches or 23 centimeters high, 6 inches or over 15 centimeters wide, and 8 inches or 20 centimeters deep. It is carved out of one piece of argillite and weighs a little under 9 ½ pounds or 4.3 kilos. The sculpture was carved in 2001 and is in excellent condition.

Transformation is at the heart of Haida art and supernatural power. Supernatural beings and ancestors possessing special powers are often depicted with the attributes of two or more beings, indicating their ability to transcend ordinary limitations.

The Dogfish or Shark Woman Symbol represents one of the most powerful and elusive supernatural beings of Haida mythology, a powerful shaman. The story of how she became a shaman of extraordinary power is now lost, but we know that her power came from the spirit of the Dogfish, of the Shark family.
