Panels

Panels are a newer art form for the Northwest Coast First Nations Peoples. A panel will typically hang on the wall, but may be displayed in other ways as well. Panels come in many sizes and shapes, are typically made of red or yellow cedar, and feature traditional northwest coast formline designs depicting traditional symbols, figures, and stories. The design may be carved into the surface as a relief, painted, or a combination of the two, and may also include inlays of abalone, mother-of-pearl, or copper. Some artists have adopted the sandblasting technique when creating panels. A stencil of the design will be placed on the surface of the wood, the artist will then ‘blast’ sand against the surface, and where the stencil does not sit will form a deeply grooved surface pattern, adding further dimension to the piece.
