Stephen Bruce
Stephen Bruce was born in 1968 in Alert Bay to the 'Namgis tribe of the Kwakwaka'wakw nation. He began carving at 18 with Ned Matilpi, Beau Dick, and Wayne Alfred. Their traditional styles and advanced experience created a high level of quality in Stephen’s work right from the beginning. Stephen has assisted many artists with commissions earning him a reputation for his work. He has completed an 18-foot totem pole for the Mitsui Corporation in Tokyo and he was Head Carver for the model Kwakwaka'wakw Village in Holland's Dolfinarium Theme Park. Stephen was also one of eight carvers that helped design and build the longhouse in Alert Bay and he created three poles near the U’mista Cultural Centre house front.
