Steve Smith
Steve Smith was born in 1968 to the Kwagiulth Nation of Campbell River, BC. He has been actively carving and painting since 1987.
Steve was initially taught by his father, the late artist Harris Smith, in the Oweekeno and Kwakwaka’wakw art form, and later branched out into his own innovative and distinct style. He has also worked with his brother, Kwakwaka’wakw artist Rod Smith.
Steve’s work utilizes traditional forms in a bold and adventurous contemporary fashion. His portfolio includes original paintings, carvings, masks, prints, etched glass, totem poles, and drums. His work is continually evolving and he is always experimenting with form, colour, and symbolism. His work has been featured in major exhibitions throughout North America and is held in collections around the world.
Steve currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC.
