Raven Steals the Light Rattle Amulet
This double-sided Raven Steals the Light Rattle Pendant has been masterfully hand-carved in argillite by Darrell White from the Haida Nation. Darrell is a master of creating miniature argillite sculptures and delights in unexpected details and intricate inlay. This exceptional work is richly embellished, incorporating 14 karat gold, 1 onlays of mammoth ivory, 3 inlays of catlinite, and 10 inlays of abalone into the argillite sculpture. The pendant comes with a small yew wood, mammoth ivory, and metal stand that displays the pendant as a delightful small sculpture when it is not being worn. This is a beautiful example of contemporary sculpture that captures the power, myth, and meaning of a Haida legend on a miniature scale.
The pendant is a miniature Rattle, hollowed out on the inside to hold glass beads. The central figure on the argillite rattle is the Raven holding the light in its beak. The Light is made of inlays of abalone and 14 karat gold. There are also two salmon or trout egg designs carved in catlinite inlays on the wings of the Raven. The handle of the rattle is wrapped in 14 karat gold with an ivory onlay at the base of the handle.
One of the most common stories in Haida culture is how the Raven stole the light in the form of the sun, the moon and stars. Many say that he transformed himself into a baby to find out where the light was hidden and then stole it from an old chief who had kept them in his house locked away in a large bentwood box. After Raven escaped with the box through the smoke hole of the house, he placed the sun, the moon and the stars in the sky for all beings to enjoy. Originally the Raven had white feathers and after flying through the smoke hole with the light, his feathers turned black and stayed black until today.
The pendant, excluding the stand, measures approximately 2 3/4 inches or 7 centimeters high, 1 1/4 inches or 3 1/8 centimeters wide, and 3/4 of an inch or 2 centimeters thick. When resting on the stand, the carving measures approximately 3 5/8 inches or 9 1/4 centimeters high, 2 1/8 inches or 5 1/4 centimeters wide, and 1 3/4 inches or 4 1/2 centimeters deep.
Argillite is a dense, black, carbonaceous shale known as kwawhlahl in the Haida language. It is found exclusively at a creek on Slatechuck Mountain (Tllgaduu randlaay) on Graham Island, the largest island in the Haida Gwaii archipelago.
Once the stone is cut from the hillside, it must be backpacked down the mountain on foot before it is carved. Argillite carvings have been prized around the world since the 1800s when the Haida began selling pieces to sailors. Today, Haida carvers continue the tradition. For those who wish to know more about this beautiful and unique sculptural tradition, Carol Sheehan's book 'Breathing Stone' is an excellent resource on contemporary Haida argillite carving and is available in the gallery.
Please note, argillite is a fragile stone. Avoid knocking argillite against hard or sharp surfaces as it can scratch or chip. If handled with care, argillite pieces will be enjoyed for many years to come.
