Jimmy Joseph
Jimmy Joseph is a Kwagiulth artist, born in 1957 in Alert Bay, BC. A fourth-generation carver, he has been carving professionally for over 50 years. He is devoted to a traditional way of life, including hunting and fishing, and actively participating in cultural events such as potlatches. Jimmy is also a member of the Native American Church and a residential school survivor.
Jimmy is well known for his intricately carved works, created using traditional materials, designs, techniques, and tools. He draws the designs freehand before carving and painting each piece, making every work unique. His distinctive style is characterized by deep carving, liberal use of dashing, and abalone inlay.
