Raven and Frog Paddle

Regular price $1,617.00 USD

This Raven and Frog yellow cedar paddle was created by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Adam Lewis. Hand-painted in acrylic, this contemporary design features Gwa’wina (raven) and Wa’k’es (frog).

The inspiration for this design were the traits and interesting characteristics believed to be associated with each the raven and frog.

In many indigenous beliefs and cultures frogs are viewed as highly intelligent creatures.

And ravens are known for many things, but I personally envision curiosity being the most interesting of ravens characteristics.

Raven is hungry, and his curiosity led him up from the beach to a muddy section of the estuary, where he met a wise frog. The frog knew almost everything, except he didn’t know how big his world really was, he imagined it to be rich and full of life as far as he could see. But he didn’t know for sure, and he wanted that knowledge.

Raven, as mentioned, was very hungry. Raven had an idea. What if you attach to me and we fly above the trees and you can see your entire territory. In trade, you can show me where all the Siła̲m (snakes) live and I can feast on them! Frog thought this was a great idea. As snakes are devious and try to do frog harm.

So they made the agreement and they have been companions ever since.

The paddle measures approximately 62 inches or 158 centimeters long, 7 inches or 18 centimeters wide, and up to 1 1/4 inches or 3 1/2 centimeters thick.

How to Hang a Paddle

Paddles can be hung vertically, horizontally, or at an angle, depending on your space and preference.

Vertical hanging: In the gallery, we tie a black cotton string around the neck of the paddle, just below the handle, and hang it from a rubber-coated hook to protect the back of the handle. The handle is positioned at the top, with the tip pointing down.

Horizontal or angled hanging: A paddle can be suspended from the wall or ceiling using clear fishing line. Simply loop two lengths of fishing line around the paddle, one near each end, to hold it securely in place.

Wall-mounted holder: Some museums use a custom-made holder lined with felt to hold the paddle securely against the wall. A metal fabricator can make a holder to suit your preferred orientation. This is not a service we offer.
