This Bukwas or Wild Man of the Woods Mask was hand-carved by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Sean Whonnock. It had been carved from red cedar and painted in black, red, green and blue acrylic. It features feathers and cedar bark for the hair and brass inlays on the eyes.
The Bukwus or Wild Man of the Woods is an eerie supernatural creature from the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation. This figure can be found lurking at the edge of a stream or in the shadows of the forest, always in search of souls that he can steal for himself.
