Woman in the Moon Argillite Pendant

$3,257.00 USD

This Woman in the Moon Pendant has been hand-carved in argillite by Darrell White from the Haida Nation. The pendant features 14 inlays of abalone shell in the eyes and framing the face, two inlays of mammoth ivory in the eyes, a mammoth ivory labret set into the lip, and sterling silver surrounding the pendant and as the bail. The pendant comes with a small yew wood, mammoth ivory, and metal stand that displays the pendant as a delightful small sculpture when it is not being worn.

The design features the face of a noblewoman set in to the moon. On the back of the pendant is carved a small ponytail, and the artists initials.

The Moon Symbol is the protector and guardian of the earth. Its spirit watches over us and can change our moods.

The pendant alone, excluding the bail and stand, measures approximately 2 inches or 5 centimeters high, 1 3/8 inches or 3 1/2 centimeters wide, and nearly 1/2 of an inch or 1 1/4 centimeters deep. As a small sculptural work mounted on the stand, the artwork measures about 3 inches or 7 5/8 centimeters high, 2 1/8 inches or 5 1/2 centimeters wide, and 1 3/4 inches or 4 1/2 centimeters deep.

About Argillite

Argillite is a dense, black, carbonaceous shale known as kwawhlahl in the Haida language. It is found exclusively at a creek on Slatechuck Mountain (Tllgaduu randlaay) on Graham Island, the largest island in the Haida Gwaii archipelago.

Once the stone is cut from the hillside, it must be backpacked down the mountain on foot before it is carved. Argillite carvings have been prized around the world since the 1800s when the Haida began selling pieces to sailors. Today, Haida carvers continue the tradition.

For those who wish to know more about this beautiful and unique sculptural tradition, Carol Sheehan's book 'Breathing Stone' is an excellent resource on contemporary Haida argillite carving and is available in the gallery.

Please note, argillite is a fragile stone. Avoid knocking argillite against hard or sharp surfaces as it can scratch or chip. If handled with care, argillite pieces will be enjoyed for many years to come.
