This Killer Whale or Maxinukw Mask is hand-carved in red cedar and signed by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Talon George from the Gwa’sala and ‘Nakwaxda’xw First Nations in Port Hardy on Vancouver Island. This large mask has been painted in black, white, red, brown, and green acrylic, and carved from a single piece of red cedar. Talon's mask incorporates design elements and markings inspired by the carvings of his ancestors. Green and white bubbles adorn the orca's forehead, while carved and painted u-forms and crescents on the face and fin imbue this mask with a power and a supernatural presence befitting the great Lord of the Ocean.
This substantial mask is about 26 inches or 66 centimeters tall, about 11 1/2 inches or 29.5 centimeters wide, and about 13 inches or 33 centimeters deep.
The last photo is a photograph of Talon George with his mask in the gallery.
