Sea Eagle Mask

$3,100.00

Sea Eagle Mask by Kwakwaka’wakw artist Walter George of the Nakwaxda’xw Nation. Sea Eagle, or Kwigwis, is a supernatural being from Kwakwaka'wakw mythology that acts as Eagle's counterpart in the Undersea Kingdom. Those to whom Kwigwis appeared were said to be blessed by the encounter.

This Sea Eagle is hand-carved in alder and painted in yellow, green, black, and red acrylic. Walter has styled the eagle with wet feathers, gills, and prickly spines on his beak. The mask is enhanced by the addition of two copper and abalone eyes, two copper and abalone ovoids on the cheeks, and eight additional abalone onlays on the Sea Eagle's brow.

The last photograph shows the artist Walter George with his mask.

This mask is about 12 ½ inches or 32 cm in height, about 9 ½ inches or 23 cm in width and about 12 inches or 30 cm in depth.
