Sharon Hitchcock
Sharon Hitchcock, also known by her Haida name Kinta-Way, was a prominent Haida artist. Born in 1951, she grew up immersed in Haida culture as a member of the K’owas Eagle Clan in the village of Old Massett on Haida Gwaii. A gifted artist, she expressed her passion and creativity through a variety of mediums including argillite, wood, metal, paint, and illustration. Notably, she was the first Indigenous woman trained in animation, contributing to the National Film Board’s Raven Stole the Light. Her other accomplishments included illustrating a children’s book in 1995 titled The Day the Sun was Stolen., and collaborating with Bill Reid on the design and painting of a 48-foot canoe bound for France.
Sharon passed away in 2009.
