This Otter Woman Mask is carved in red cedar and painted by Stephen Bruce from the Kwakwaka´wakw Nation. It was inspired by the many times that he carved together with, and learned from the late Kwakwaka´wakw Master Carver Beau Dick.
"The land Otter is the most powerful of all guardian spirits. People believe that Land Otters were originally human, and so possess all the knowledge and power of both species. Otter Woman has the ability to navigate between the realms of the spirit world and the human world. She coaxes and seduces those she encounters with her ability to transform into any other being or person. She can successfully deceive those who find themselves in her presence. A person may believe that they are speaking to a friend or relative, only to find themselves immersed in the spirit world, slowly transforming into a Land Otter themselves. Given all of these powers and attributes, Otter Woman is considered a strong shamanic figure." quoted from Stephen Bruce.
The mask without the horse hair is 11.5 inches or over 29 centimeters wide, 14.5 inches or close to 37 centimeters long and 8 inches or over 20 centimeters deep. Including the Horse Hair it is about 18 inches or 46 centimeters wide and 30 inches or close to 77 centimeters long.
