Guardian of the Legacy

Regular price $29,800.00 CAD

This amazing Guardian of the Gildas Totem Pole was created by Kwakwaka'wakw carver Junior Henderson. It has been carved in red cedar, painted in black, red, green and yellow acrylic, and features 13 abalone inlays on the box. The Thunderbird is attached to the lid of the box, which can be removed from the base of the box.

The carving depicts the Thunderbird with the Orca crest carved into the chest and wings. The Thunderbird stands atop an enclosed box with a Sisuitl, or three-headed Sea Serpent, carved into it. This masterpiece highlights Junior's use of a wide variety of knife or tool finishing techniques.

The Thunderbird Symbol represents power, protection, and strength. He is often seen as the most powerful of all spirits and can also transform into human form by opening his head up like a mask and taking his feathers off as if they were a mere blanket. Under his wings are lightning snakes, which he can use as a tool or weapon.

The Orca or Killer Whale symbolizes family, romance, longevity, harmony, travel, community and protection. He is said to protect those who travel away from home, and to lead them back when the time comes. Orcas will often stay their whole life with the same pod and raise each calf with care.

The Sisiutl or Sea Serpent symbolizes protection, supernatural power and revival. It is one of the most powerful symbols in Kwakwaka’wakw culture. The Sisiutl/Sisiulth is a supernatural three-headed serpent that possesses shapeshifting abilities and the ability to turn spectators into stone when gazed upon.
