Alikwamae Mask by Kwakwaka’wakw artist Shawn Karpes. This mask is finely carved from alder and accented in red, black, blue and orange acrylic and also features human hair. The interior of the mask is also finely finished. This mask depicts the orphan Alikwamae who after being rescued by a mouse was taken to Komokwa, the Chief of the Undersea People. Alikwamae wanted to help his people so Komokwa gave him the power to transform into a sea bear. Alikwamae returned to his village and was able to transform, heal the sick and injured, predict the future and interpret dreams.

 

Shawn Karpes was born in 1968 and is a member of the Namgis (Nimpkish) First Nation. He descends from the Alfred, Hunt, Scow and Innis families.

Without hair, the mask is about 10 inches or 26 cm in height, 8 ½ inches or 21 cm in width and about 7 ½ inches or 18 cm in depth. With hair included the mask is about 19 ½ inches or 50 cm in length. The price includes shipping to the USA and Canada.
