Chief of the Undersea Kingdom or Komokwa Mask by Kwakwaka’wakw artist Walter Brown of the Nakwaxda’xw Nation.This Komokwa is hand carved in red cedar and painted in black, white, green and red acrylic by Kwakwaka’wakw artist Walter Brown. The mask is enhanced by the addition of four copper U-shapes, two round copper eyes with crescents and two copper circles on the cheeks.
Komokwa represents the “Wealthy One” and is the mythical King of the Supernatural Undersea World. He is also called the Copper Maker. The King or Guardian of the Sea is a powerful and wealthy ruler who lives in a great house made of copper under the sea, filled with food and treasures. It is said that he is the master and protector of the seals and has live sea lions as house posts that guard the entrance.
The mask is about 14 ½ inches or 37 cm in height, 10 ½ inches or 26 cm in width and about 7 inches or 17 cm in depth.
