Chief of the Undersea World with Loon Mask

$5,300.00

This large Komokwa or Chief of the Undersea World with Loon Mask is painted and carved in red cedar by Master Carver Carey Newman from the Kwakwaka´wakw and Coast Salish Nations. The mask features an articulated loon on the top of the mask whose flapping wings are activated by pulling on an integrated nylon and leather toggle that hangs beneath the mask. The mask is adorned with cedar bark, cedar twine, and ovoid copper eyes in the shape of salmon troutheads, and is painted in light blue, black, and red acrylic. The loon has copper eyes and is also painted in black, red, and light blue acrylic. In Kwakwaka'wakw culture, Komokwa is the powerful chief of the Supernatural Undersea People who lives in a house under the sea filled with riches. Komokwa (or Kumugwe) means "Wealthy One".

Including the cedar bark, the mask is about 27 inches or 68 centimeters long, about 17 inches or 43 centimeters wide, and about 10.5 inches or 26 centimeters deep. Without the cedar bark, the mask is about 23 inches or 58 centimeters long.

This mask was carved by Carey Newman in 2000 and is a great early example of his work.

The price includes regular shipping to the USA and Canada.
