This fabulous Giant (Tsonoqua) Mask by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Wayne Alfred was hand-carved in alder in 2017 and is signed by the artist. This mask is painted in black acrylic and also features bear and horsehair.
Wayne Alfred is from the 'Namgis Band in Alert Bay. Wayne was born in 1958 and is a very respected artist, mentor, dancer, and knowledge keeper who is involved in all aspects of his cultural heritage. He is a distinguished painter and carver, who is well known by collectors for his high technical ability and traditional accuracy.
This is the male form of the Tsonoqua - a giant of forest and high mountain endowed with ferocity, great strength and formidable alertness. The male Tsonoqua is also a wealth bringer and is used in the important ceremony of distribution of coppers by the chief. He may also be present among the warrior-spirit characters in the winter enactments of myth.
This mask excluding the long hair is about 13 inches or 33 centimeters long, about 12 inches or 30 1/2 centimeters wide, and about 7 inches or 17 3/4 centimeters deep. Including the long hair the mask is about 36 inches or 91 1/2 centimeters long.
