This vibrant Komokwa or Chief of the Undersea World Mask is by Eugene Isaac from the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation. It is carved from red cedar and painted in light green, red, yellow, turquoise, black, white and copper acrylic and is finished with cedar bark twine and bark bundles. The mask has rounded eyes, aquatic features, a painted copper shaped frontlet as well as two painted copper ‘ears’ to either side of the mask.
In Kwakwaka’wakw culture, Komokwa is the ‘Wealth Giver’ or ‘Copper Maker’ and is the powerful chief of the Supernatural Undersea People.
