Cole Speck

Model Cedar Canoe

$7,500.00

This hand-carved model cedar Orca canoe is carved in red cedar by Cole Speck from the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation. It has been finely painted in acrylic on both sides and features a striking Kwakwaka'wakw whale formline design. The last image shows Cole Speck with the model canoe.

In creating this piece, Cole was inspired by a model canoe carved by the great 19th-century Heiltsuk artist, carver, and canoe maker Captain Richard Carpenter (1841-1931). The killer whale designs on the sides of the canoe are one of Carpenter's family crests. Carpenter's canoe is held in the collections of the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Cole Speck apprenticed under renowned master carver Wayne Alfred and was also mentored by, and a senior apprentice to the late Beau Dick, celebrated artist, activist, and master carver.

This canoe is about 35 inches or 89 centimeters long and about 9 inches or 23 centimeters high, and 8 3/4 or 22.5 inches wide. This model canoe was in a gallery collection until now.

The price includes shipping to the USA and Canada.
