Pugwis or Merman Mask by Tom Patterson from the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Nation, is carved from red cedar and painted in acrylic. The signed and dated Mask represents an undersea spirit in human form. The fishlike face with its rounded eyes and eyebrows, gills and prominent front incisors, features cedar bark and feathers. Without the cedar bark the mask is 11 ½ inches or close to 29 centimeters long, 8 inches or over 20 centimeters wide and 6 inches or over 15 centimeters deep. Including the Cedar bark, the mask is about 15 inches or 38 centimeters long and close to 14 inches or 35 centimeters wide.
