Tlingit Otter Shaman Mask

$3,750.00

Tlingit Otter Shaman or Kushtaka Ixt  Mask by Kwakwaka’wakw artist Shawn Karpes. This mask is finely carved from alder and painted in red, black, and green acrylic. Abalone and copper earrings, a crown of carved wooden horns representing otters, and faux fur complete the mask. Each otter 'horn' has two abalone inlays for eyes and a carved and painted red mouth.

Alder's unique grain provides a strong element within the mask design and is used to exemplify the mask’s delicate human-like structure. The interior of the mask is also finely carved and finished.

Shawn Karpes was born in 1968 and is a member of the Namgis (Nimpkish) First Nation. He descends from the Alfred, Hunt, Scow, and Innis families. Shawn is known for creating pieces inspired by Northwest Coast shamanic objects.

The mask is about 14 inches or 35 cm long from crown tip to chin, 16 inches or about 40 cm in width from crown tip to crown tip, or about 9 inches or 23 centimeters in width from ear to ear, and about 7 ½ inches or 18 cm deep.

The price includes shipping to the USA and Canada.
