The Komokwa/King of the Undersea World

The Native Komokwa Symbol represents the “Wealthy One” and is the mythical King of the Supernatural Undersea World. He is also called the Copper Maker.

The King or Guardian of the Sea is a very powerful and wealthy ruler who lives in a great House made of copper under the sea, filled with food and treasures. It is said that he is the master and protector of the seals and has live sea lions as house posts that guard the entrance.

Komokwa Symbol and First Nations

As the King of the Undersea World many of the sea creatures like octopods, killer whales, loons, seals, sea lions, and sculpins are closely associated with him. You will very often find representations of these creators attached to the image of Komokwa.

Native Art - Komokwa Symbol

Spirits of the West Coast Native Art Gallery sells Komokwa Symbol prints, Native American Jewelry, Komokwa carvings, Komokwa ceremonial masks, gold and silver bracelets and bentwood boxes, all inspired by the Komokwa Symbol.

Contributions

If you have any further information or stories with or about this Native American Symbol or totem and you would like to share them with our readers, please feel free to email them to us. If they are appropriate we will add them to this page. Thank you!
