This sculpture "Ocean Pinnacle" was hand-carved and painted by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Rod Smith. It had been carved from basswood, sits on a removable red cedar base, and has been painted in black, blue, and white acrylic. Rod is perhaps best known for his precise and elegant painting style.
This sculpture was inspired by ocean pinnacles. An ocean pinnacle is pillar-like mound off the ocean floor that has a dense concentration of marine life inhabiting it. An ocean pinnacle is akin to an oasis or an area of abundance.
The sculpture, including the base, measures approximately 12 3/4 inches or 32 1/2 centimeters high, 5 1/4 inches or 13 1/4 centimeters wide, and 3 1/8 inches or 8 centimeters deep.
