Sea Bear Mask by Bill Henderson

$6,600.00

This Sea Bear Mask is carved and painted by Kwakwaka'wakw Master Carver Bill Henderson from the Wei Wai Kum Nation in Campbell River. In Kwakwaka'wakw mythology, the Sea Bear is an undersea bear that lives in the Sea Kingdom. The Sea Kingdom includes all sea creatures both real and mythical and includes animals and birds who are the counterparts of the creatures who dwell in the Earth and Sky Kingdoms. The Sea Bear is identifiable by his fish-like gills at the sides of his mouth, and the prickly spines on the top of his snout.

This large mask is over 22 inches or 56 centimeters long, 9.5 inches or over 34 centimeters wide, and 13.5 inches or 34.5 centimeters high. The mask is carved in red cedar, painted in red, green, black, and white acrylic, and is finished with twined cedar bark.  This piece can be displayed on a wall as a mask, or on a surface or plinth as a headdress.

The last photograph shows Bill Henderson in his studio with his Sea Bear Mask partially painted.

The price includes shipping to the USA and Canada.
