Sea Monster Yagis with Sculpin Mask

Regular price $3,990.00 CAD

This Sea Monster or Yagis with Sculpin Mask is carved from red cedar and painted by Bill Henderson from the Kwakwaka´wakw or Kwakiutl Nation.

Yagis is one of many Kwakwaka'wakw Sea Monsters capable of causing storms, waves, and dangerous whirlpools. The dance of the Yagis is characterized by movements akin to a Sea Mammal, surfacing and breathing. The copper and abalone on this mask are also indications of great wealth.

The Sculpin Symbol is a widespread family crest used by families from the Haida, the Kwakwaka´wakw, Kwakiutl or Kwaguilth People as well as families from other West Coast Nations. The Sculpin is closely associated with Komokwa, the King of the Undersea World.
